TAUNY has received a $500 donation from Nihanawate Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution,  for a new interactive exhibit at The TAUNY Center that will feature recipients of TAUNY’s North Country Heritage Awards.  The gift from this St. Lawrence County-based chapter of NSDAR is in addition to TAUNY’s receipt of a $5,000 donation for the exhibit project from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, which the local chapter helped secure.  The contribution from Nihanawate Chapter will specifically support digitization and presentation of archival materials associated with Akwesasne Basket Makers, who received the North Country Heritage Award in 1994.

Marlyne Miller, Nihanawate Chapter Regent, explained that the chapter has supported the Akwesasne Cultural Center including the Museum and Library for many years.  “Members make donations at each chapter meeting and we collect the donations in a special basket made by one of the Akwesasne basket makers,” she said.

“The new exhibit we are producing will draw on 30 years-worth of archival material associated with 129 recipients of the award to date,”  reported Jill Breit, TAUNY Executive Director. “ We are delighted to accept the $500 gift from the Nihanawate Chapter and thank them for their help with the national donation.”  Individuals and businesses interested in making gifts to the new exhibit may contact Jill, jill@tauny.org, for more information. All contributors to the project will be credited in the permanent exhibit.
