The TAUNY Board of Directors is looking for individuals who are interested in joining the board to help guide and support the organization as it continues to look towards the future.  New board members will be part of a team dedicated to TAUNY’s mission to enhance life in the North Country through a wide range of programs and initiatives. TAUNY provides services in the 14-county Adirondack-North Country.

“TAUNY is always evolving as an organization, and this is an exciting time to get involved and help the organization move forward.  We’ve recently adopted a new strategic plan and are looking for people who care about the North Country and want to participate in achieving the vision outlined in that plan,” said board president Jackie Sauter. “We are seeking people who have experience to share in the areas of fundraising, marketing, accounting, legal matters, and digital strategy, but welcome other skills and expertise.  We especially encourage individuals who live outside St. Lawrence County to consider joining our board.”

Anyone interested in more information about assisting the organization by joining the Board of Directors, can email TAUNYboard@gmail.com or call Executive Director Jill Breit, 315-386-4289.  Interested candidates are also welcome to speak to anyone currently on the board. In addition to Sauter, current TAUNY board members include Ruth McWilliams, South Colton; Pete Beekman, Canton; Neal Burdick, Canton; Alan Hersker, Oxbow; Karen Johnson-Weiner, Canton; Madeline Snell Pennington, Parishville; and Chris Covert, Saranac Lake.

TAUNY is the only organization in New York’s North Country dedicated to showcasing the folk culture and living traditions of the region. TAUNY collects, preserves, interprets, and presents the customs and traditions of the North Country. With archives, exhibits, and programs in Canton and throughout the region, TAUNY celebrates the diversity of living traditions in our region, for residents and visitors alike.  TAUNY’s work is focused on enhanced regional pride, increased economic vitality, affirmation of regional values and traditions, and encouragement of the stewardship of these customs and traditions for posterity. The organization welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds and seeks to connect people to the cultures of everyday life in the North Country and to each other.

Recent TAUNY events and projects include regional artist spotlight exhibits; seasonal celebrations featuring regional music and food; crafts demonstrations; exhibits focused on regional musical instrument-making; a tribute to Tug Hill traditions and people; maple sugaring parties; celebrations of regional tradition-bearers and special places; and special activities for children and families. In addition, TAUNY’s Folkstore showcases and sells the work of regional artists and craftspeople, contributing to the North Country’s arts-based economy.
