Evergreen Award

The Evergreen Award was created by the TAUNY Board of Directors to be presented occasionally to acknowledge and honor the contributions of individuals, community groups, or businesses “for continuing interest in and generous support of traditional cultures, arts, and artists of the North Country of New York State and of programs that increase public understanding and appreciation of them.”

The name of the award was inspired by TAUNY’s logo—a close replica of an evergreen motif taken from a decorative scrawl on a late 19th century stoneware jar from Ogdensburg, most likely made by the famed Hart potter Company, since the work of those being honored by the award also suggests the nurturing of old customs or traditions that could easily be abandoned or forgotten if those who have inherited them lose sight of their worth or usefulness.

This award reminds us that keeping our folk heritage vital takes work and dedication and there are some among us willing to devote themselves to that cause.
