On Saturday, October 15, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm The TAUNY Center in Canton, NY invites members of the community to join us for a program focussing on French-American Heritage called “Share Your French Heritage! Stories from Quebec.” Local residents with Quebecois and/or French ancestry are invited to share their stories about how their families came to the North Country and how they maintain a connection to their cultural identity. Participants are encouraged to bring their own photos of family members and homesteads, objects that represent family traditions, and other artifacts and heirlooms that tell the story of their French heritage. In addition to hearing these stories, we’re interested in hearing ideas for future programs and projects that present this heritage to a wide audience. The program will be led by TAUNY’s Executive Director, Jill Breit. This program is free and open to the public.

TAUNY is bringing this opportunity to talk about your French heritage to other locations as well and this program will also take place at partner organizations throughout the North Country this October and November. The full schedule for this French-American Heritage Program Series includes the following:

  • October 15, 1:00 pm - The TAUNY Center, Canton, NY
  • October 29, 1:00 pm - Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) Gallery, Keeseville, NY
  • November 2, 6:00 pm - Chateaugay Town Hall Theater (Co-Sponsored by The Chateaugay Memorial Library), Chateaugay, NY
  • November 5, 1:00 pm - Clayton Opera House, Clayton, NY
  • November 12, 1:00 pm - Samuel de Champlain History Center, Champlain, NY
  • November 19, 1:00 pm  - Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, NY

These programs are a part of a larger French-American heritage research project at TAUNY. The organization has received funding to work with other partners in the region to research Northern New York’s historical connection to Quebec and France and to investigate the ongoing cultural influence of that connection. Partners for the project include Lakes to Locks Passage, Adirondack Museum, and Mountain Lake PBS, as well as artists, scholars, and community members with French-American ancestry. Research activity will be concentrated in St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, Jefferson, Hamilton and Essex Counties. The proximity of New York's North Country to Quebec, and the migration south that began in the 1830s assured a cultural influence that continues.

Research project activity will include:
  • Compiling an inventory of existing presentation of French-American culture across the region.
  • Research in regional archives for historical material connected to the North Country's connections with Quebec.
  • Documentation of ongoing cultural practices in music, dance, storytelling and material arts.
  • Development of a plan for a multi-media presentation of the region's French-American heritage.

Research will continue through December 2016.

This project is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The TAUNY Center is located at 53 Main Street, downtown Canton. TAUNY is a nonprofit organization that showcases the folk culture and living traditions of New York's North Country, offering opportunities to experience, learn about, and reflect on issues related to life in our rural region.
