“Health and happiness shall come to thee, should ye find a nest in thy Christmas tree.”

Children and adults alike are invited to The TAUNY Center to learn the traditional art of rug braiding while creating a tiny braided nest to hide in their tree.

On Saturday, December 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, traditional Adirondack rug braider Helen Condon will offer a workshop for braiders age 7 and up to learn rug-braiding skills by making a small braided black-throated green warbler’s nest. “The tradition says you hide a nest in your tree,” says Helen, “and the first person to find it is guaranteed health and happiness in the coming year.”

From her home and studio – the renovated Parishville Grange hall  – Helen Condon has been designing and making rugs for more than 50 years. Recipient of TAUNY’s 2004 North Country Heritage Award, Helen continues teaching and making custom rugs on commission. Several of her braided rugs are for sale in TAUNY’s Holiday Showcase.

The cost of the braided nest workshop is $20 per person ($15 for TAUNY Friends); all materials will be provided. Participation is limited and registration is required. Call 386-4289 or email folkstore@tauny.org to register.
