Phase 2 renovations to The TAUNY Center began in early March with renovations to the lower level of the building. When J.J. Newberry's occupied the building, this space was where they kept their display of fabric and sewing supplies. How surprised the staff of Newberry's might be to see that the space has been converted into a cozy reading room. The stand-out feature of the reading room is the exposed stone walls. These limestone foundation walls were in excellent condition and just needed cleaning and repointing to be a very appealing focal point for the space, a perfect contrast to the deep red floor. Also now complete in the lower level is the structure for an audio booth, and a climate-controlled space for our archival collection.

Attention will now turn to work on the upper level. First in line there is to build a meeting room and offices in the unfinished half of the upstairs.

September 2011
With great excitement and fanfare, The TAUNY Center was officially re-opened on Friday, September 16, at a reception for campaign donors, and for the Grand Re-Opening on Saturday, September 17.

About 100 generous and enthusiastic donors to the Evergreen Campaign gathered Friday evening to celebrate the completion of Phase 1 renovations. Campaign Co-Chairs Joe and Dine Kennedy and Honorary Co-Chairs T. Urling and Mabel Walker cut the ribbon to open the renovated gallery space and the new exhibit "Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Life."

The finish line is in sight! With the generous support of North Country friends, we have reached 85 percent of our $1.25 million campaign goal. Special thank you to long-time TAUNY supporters Gray & Gray CPAs, P.C.,  John, Christine, and Angela Gray, for pledging $5,000 toward the Evergreen Campaign. Gray & Gray CPAs, P.C.are one of TAUNY's oldest and dearest friends. Gray & Gray CPAs, P.C. has underwritten numerous exhibits including "Funny Men of the Adirondacks" in 2006, "Carvers, Turners & Burners: A Showcase of North Country Woodwork" in 2007, and "Anatomy of a Packbasket" in 2009. They will  underwrite TAUNY's fall 2011 exhibits,  "Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Art" and "TAUNY at 25 at Retrospective."  Just before The TAUNY Center closed for renovations in June, the Grays stopped by to check out progress--of renovations and the Evergreen Campaign!

A Celebration of Hazel Tyrrell...and More!

On May 26, 2011, more than 160 North Country friends came together in Eben Holden Hall at St. Lawrence University to celebrate the life and work of Hazel Tyrrell and TAUNY's 25th anniversary. Guests enjoyed an evening of food and drink while bidding on live and silent auction items in support of the Evergreen Campaign--and they bid generously on a special collection of Hazel Tyrrell birds. Kip Blanchard of Blanchard's Auction Service hosted a terrific auction, raising over $20,000.  Thank to to all who participated!

TAUNY is pleased to be one of several North Country organizations to recently receive funding from Ronald McDonald Charities of Northern New York.

“We are grateful for the generous donation to our Evergreen Campaign for renovations to The TAUNY Center,” says TAUNY Center Project Director Varick Chittenden.  “Phase II of our project includes creation of an Education Gallery on the second floor of the Center. In that space, we visitors--especially children--will meet and learn from master traditional artists of all kinds, with workshops, demonstrations, concerts, and school classes.  We welcome Ronald McDonald House Charities as a partner in our educational programming. “

SeaComm Federal Credit Union has committed $5,000 in support of TAUNY's Evergreen Campaign to renovate The TAUNY Center on Main Street in Canton. Barb Bessette, Assistant Manager of SeaComm’s Canton branch, hands over the second installment check to TAUNY Development Director Kristen Whittier. Also present for the check presentation were TAUNY Center Project Director Varick Chittenden and SeaComm Financial Services Representatives Heather Perkins and Terry Torrey.  TAUNY is 84 percent of the way to raising $1.25 million for renovations to the cultural heritage center thanks to support from members, friends, and local businesses like SeaComm.

November 2010

We have a lot of good news for the Evergreen Campaign! In September we received terrific news that we have been awarded a $195,850 grant for downtown revitalization from the Empire State Development Corporation (see press release). We also received donations and pledges from the Corning Foundation, the Fresh Sound Foundation, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northern New York, Inc.

These contributions put us just over the million dollar mark and at 82 percent of our $1.25 million goal.

That’s terrific, but we’re only part way there. We’re confident we can finish the job by showing broad community support for Phase 2 renovations. In addition, it’s very important to TAUNY’s future sustainability that we eliminate our mortgage as soon as possible. Monthly payments are the equivalent of at least one staff position or several of our programs each year. That’s why our Board has placed a high priority on reducing the debt and including it in our campaign goal.

To make all that possible, we must continue our fundraising efforts. The Evergreen Campaign has done very well so far, but we have hard work ahead of us to reach our goal. Our Campaign Committee and Board are committed to completing our campaign in a timely manner.

These are exciting times at TAUNY!  In July the first phase of renovations to The TAUNY Center will begin. Phase 1 construction includes general infrastructure improvements and electrical upgrades, work on the Main Street and rear façades, a new handicap-accessible rear entrance and first-floor restroom, an elevator, and repairs and improvements to first floor gallery and Folkstore space.

“Completing the first phase of work on The TAUNY Center is a major step for us,” says TAUNY Center Project Director Varick A. Chittenden. “Treating this historic building with the respect it deserves and making it more accessible for everyone have been among our primary goals.“

During this phase of renovations, over the summer months a scaled-down North Country Folkstore will remain open Tuesday through Friday (closed Saturdays). Most of the building will be inaccessible and there will be no exhibits; the staff will be working off the premises.

The Evergreen Campaign, under the leadership of SUNY Canton President Joe Kennedy and Dine Kennedy, is ongoing.  We are especially pleased to announce that the Evergreen Campaign has been awarded a $40,000 grant from The Sumasil Fund of The Saint Paul Foundation. The gift was prompted by Jennifer Newell Easton, who has deep roots in the North Country and great enthusiasm for the work TAUNY is doing.

Additional funding is required for the second phase of construction, which includes renovations to create classroom/meeting space, a recording studio, and offices on the second floor and archives and collections space on the basement level. Energy conservation improvements will also be made in the next phase.

If you have not done so, please consider making a pledge to the Evergreen Campaign today.  Help us make The TAUNY Center a reality for the North Country.  Be sure to check this website regularly for photos and construction updates - watch us grow!

April 2010

We received official word that the National Park Service has awarded TAUNY a matching grant of $150,000 for the Evergreen Campaign. The grant is part of the federal Save America's Treasures initiative to preserve significant historic properties and collections.

Save America's Treasures is a public-private partnership that includes the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Park Service, and the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Through creative collaboration with preservation organizations, private donors, foundations, corporations, and media outlets, Save America's Treasures raises awareness and new resources for the nation's most important historic and cultural preservation efforts. The program is administered by the National Park Service.

According to Dwight Young of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, “Since its establishment in 1998, Save America’s Treasures has been a hugely successful tool for preserving the buildings, structures, documents, and works of art that tell America’s story – and for creating jobs and boosting local economies, too. The program has spotlighted some world-famous icons like the Star-Spangled Banner and Ellis Island. It has also opened people’s eyes to the importance--and fragility--of the lesser-known treasures in their own hometowns.”

“As a North Country resident, I am so glad that Representative John McHugh took the time and interest to give an impassioned speech in support of Save America's Treasures funding for TAUNY's capital project,” said Dine Kennedy, Co-Chair of the Evergreen Campaign with her husband, SUNY Canton President Joe Kennedy. The TAUNY Center Project Director Varick Chittenden echoed Mrs. Kennedy’s enthusiastic appreciation: “We are honored to receive a Save America's Treasures grant this year and very grateful to former Congressman McHugh for his help. It is a tremendous boost to TAUNY's current Evergreen Campaign to create The TAUNY Center and an important affirmation of our efforts to preserve our wonderful building in the heart of Canton's historic downtown. This grant acknowledges the importance of historic preservation to the quality of life in our communities and TAUNY's commitment to contribute to both the aesthetic and economic vitality of Canton and the North Country.”

January 2010
Only two months since our campaign kickoff we have reached 50% of our goal, over $600,000. What a terrific milestone!

Some of our earliest success came from grants of public funds. These are especially exciting, as they recognize the value of our project and the need for more public access to the arts, especially in our rural downtown areas.
  • $70,000 - New York Main Street program (supports enhancement of central business districts) for repairs and improvements to both our front and rear facades.
  • $60,000 - United States Department of Agriculture’s Community Facilities Program will help us install an elevator for access to all three floors of our building
  • $45,000 - New York State Council on the Arts Capital Grants Program for increased handicap access by way of the elevator and restrooms.
We have also received generous gifts and pledges from private sources - individuals, families, and businesses throughout the North Country. Most recently we received notice of a grant from the Northern New York Community Foundation for $50,000 toward development of The TAUNY Center. The foundation is a wonderful organization that has generously supported causes of all kinds in Jefferson and Lewis counties for years. The recent expansion of their mission into St. Lawrence County was fortuitous for TAUNY and we will make every effort to be a good partner with them.

We’ve also received significant gifts and pledges from several businesses who have been loyal supporters of our programs in the past, including leadership contributions from North Country Savings Bank, Pease & Gustafson, LLP, St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, White’s Flowers, SeaComm Federal Credit Union, Niles Asset Management, and Community Bank, NA.

November 2009
Following more than a year of preparation, TAUNY announced the $1.25 million Evergreen Campaign at the annual Member Reception on Friday, November 13. More than 100 members, including Business Circle supporters and underwriters, were on hand to hear Campaign Co-Chairs introduce "Keeping TAUNY Evergreen: A Campaign for the Future."

The Kennedys, along with Honorary Co-Chairs Tom and Mabel Walker, announced that the Campaign Committee and TAUNY staff have already secured 37 percent--or $468,285 in donations and pledges from North Country friends, private foundations, and public funders--toward the campaign goal.
