Remote from major urban centers and often remote from each other, small towns have long been the central force for commerce and socializing in the North Country. Schools, churches, town halls, general stores, post offices and fire halls are situated in most villages and hamlets, as gathering places for people to help and be helped by their neighbors. Activities which help to reinforce and celebrate shared values and a shared sense of belonging exist in many North Country places.
