Traditional Arts in Upstate New York seeks a part-time (15-20 hours/week) Front of House Folkstore & Newberry Café employee at The TAUNY Center. This individual must have experience in hospitality and retail sales, basic point of sales operation, and customer service. Front of House worker must be personable and fit into the intimate and welcoming environment that is a staple of The TAUNY Center. This individual must be a team player, diligent, and be willing to assist in varied tasks that come from a fast paced non-profit operation including: product preparation and service; overseeing volunteers; setup and cleanup; and counting/rectifying cash drawer. The position pays $15.50/hour and has an anticipated start date of November 1st, 2025 but will remain open until filled.

 

Skills:

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Facility with POS systems and handling money
  • Adaptability in response to team needs.
  • Effective and professional communication with culinary artist, volunteers, staff, and the public.

 

Tasks:

  • Taking and fulfilling customer orders and operating POS system.
  • Setting up and accurately handling cash drawer.
  • Selling a variety of products in the Folkstore and Café.
  • Setting up and cleaning up space.

 

The successful candidate should have these qualifications:

  • Completion of a high school degree (a current college student could work well for this position)
  • 2-3 years of applicable experience.
  • Enthusiasm about working with TAUNY’s staff and Board of Directors to fulfill the mission of the organization.

GRAND OPENING

CANTON, NY – After testing the cafe with local culinary artists and patrons for six months, TAUNY’s Newberry Cafe celebrated its grand opening on Monday, October 14th, 2024.The organization was delighted to share this moment with Mary Ann Ashley, Superintendent of the Village of Canton, Katie Berry, Community Coordinator at the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, and several Board of Directors members including Jackie Sauter and Martha Foley Smith.  Working closely with local culinary artists, the cafe brings dishes that have roots in the North Country and contemporary offerings as well, all with quality ingredients, some of which will come directly from local North Country farms. . The cafe runs every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. serving paninis, crepes, & quiche, and new items including soups, salads and special desserts.

TAUNY’S Newberry Cafe:

 The cafe will focus on healthy options and sustainable practices and a reliance on local distributors. With a focus on an eat-in environment and attentive customer service, the Newberry Cafe will be a welcoming space that builds community connections within the ambiance of The TAUNY Center.

The name “Newberry Cafe” is derived from the J.J Newberry Co. a variety store which occupied the building for nearly 60 years. Newberry’s, founded by John Josiah Newberry of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, was a successful five-and-dime store chain throughout the U.S. and Canada through most of the 20th century. Read More

CULINARY ARTISTS

The Newberry Cafe began as a pilot in February of 2024, when Culinary Artist Andre Comandon and Executive Director Joshua Vink met to discuss the need and prospects of a viable cafe in The TAUNY Center.

Andre’s background as a cook and facility with wonderful crepes, baked goods, and general dishes helped build the foundation for the cafe. Running on Wednesday and Saturday once a month, the model drew on an embedded fiber and visual arts groups that met at The Center regularly.

 

The next phase of the Cafe was with Catherine Brownell, whose mother Theresa Stone had had a longstanding connection with TAUNY and Kate grew up attending programs at The Center. Kate brought in some delicious drink and food options, in particular a blueberry lemonade and wonderful baked good, as well as continuing to cook the foods that Andre had begun for the cafe. Read More
