DANCES

TAUNY has a long history of bringing traditional dances to The TAUNY Center and partnering organizations such as Pickins Hall and the Crary Mills Grange. Featuring multiple styles of dance (waltz, contra, reels (line) and square), these events are led by professional dance callers and are accompanied by a live traditional band. People of all ages are welcome, and give the community an opportunity to come together in a vibrant positive environment that carries on the traditions of country barn and social dances.

General Family Oriented Dances:

These community events offer an evening of energetic, easy-to-follow social dancing to live traditional North Country and Celtic fiddle tunes. Dance callers such as Beth Robinson or Dan Duggan teach and calls contra, Quebecois, and circle dances, while award-winning fiddlers Don Woodcock and Gretchen Koehler provide live music.

Contra Dance Series

TAUNY hosts Contra Dances at The TAUNY Center and partnering organizations throughout the North Country. These events have live music from Contra North, a band featuring musicians Brooke Goddard, Holland Goddard, and Matt Bullwinkel, and are led by master caller Beth Robinson.

These events carry on a long tradition of the Contra Dance art form in the North Country. Its focus is on couples and group dancing in extended lines and it has origins in French, Scottish and English dance styles and was brought to New England from these areas in the 17th century. Also known as “longways” dancing, it features dancing in “sets” or lines of about a dozen couples. Read More
