Hammond, St. Lawrence County
Annual Junior Agricultural Exhibition
On the third weekend of each September for the past 60 years, the farm families of northwestern St. Lawrence County have produced the Hammond 4-H and FFA Fair. Unlike so many other fairs with similar origins, there is no midway of carnival rides to entertain the audience. Organized by the Hammond Fair Association, it instead remains a genuine small town agricultural fair, with a variety of activities like sheep and cattle judging, vegetable and baked goods competitions, and a horse show for junior competitors. All the exhibitors are teenagers or younger. There are even a number of competitions that you would find on a country school playground a hundred years ago, like three-legged races, an egg toss and a tug-of-war. The entire event is planned to emphasize the agricultural heritage of northwestern St. Lawrence County and to encourage the younger generation to continue in that way of life.
