TAUNY will mark the re-opening of The TAUNY Center on Saturday, February 9, with the opening of a new exhibit, Artists of the Forest. The exhibit features traditional artists from the Northern Forest Region, including several from the North Country.

The Northern Forest is 30 million acres of woodland, mountains, rivers, and lakes extending from Maine’s most northern county, across New Hampshire’s North Country and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, to New York’s Adirondacks and Tug Hill Region. Considered America’s oldest working woodlands, the Northern Forest is also home to a remarkable range of traditional artists.

Artists of the Forest features 13 traditional artists from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and northern New York, including Abenaki basketmaker Jeanne Brink (VT), Acadian woodcarver Tom Cote (ME), rustic furniture makers Annette and Sherman Craig (NY), birch bark canoe maker Steve Cayard (ME), rustic furniture maker Ron Fenlong (NY), rustic furniture maker Barry Gregson (NY), Abenaki basketmaker Jesse Larocque (VT), dog sled maker Karen Jones (NH), snowshoe maker and packbasket maker Bill Mackowski (ME), rustic furniture maker Fred Peryer (NY), wood carver Melvin Roy, and the late Newt Washburn, Abenaki basketmaker from Stowe, VT, and Bethlehem, NH.

Whether shaping snowshoes, building birch bark canoes or crafting twig furniture, these artists artfully balance skill with traditional knowledge—keeping alive an important part of this region’s heritage. This exhibit explores that heritage and its relationship to the natural environment of the Northern Forest.

Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Quimby Family Foundation, and the Maine Community Foundation, Artists of the Forest is organized by Cultural Resources of Rockport, Maine working in collaboration with TAUNY and the Vermont Folklife Center. The exhibit will also tour to sites in Vermont and Maine.
