KEEPING
TAUNY EVERGREEN:
A Campaign for the Future
In February 2009, TAUNY took a bold step and purchased space to call our new home.
Following are answers to questions about where we've come from and where we're heading.
Q Why
did TAUNY need a new building?
A Since 1993, TAUNY
has rented space for galleries, shop, and offices in Canton, first on West Street and then on the island on West Main Street. As programming and staff grew, the space was inadequate and cramped, so
the TAUNY Board of Directors sought options for relocating. When the former J.J. Newberry’s and Homefront
retail store building, on Main Street in Canton’s historic downtown, became available
in the fall of 2007, the Board took note. The
three-story, historic building with 9,000 square feet of usable space on
three floors seemed the perfect fit for our future plans.
Q What is TAUNY’s vision for the new building—The TAUNY Center?
A We envision The TAUNY Center—as the region’s interpretive center for folklife and local culture—to be a dynamic place, with year-round activities for audiences of all ages. It will be a place for local residents to share traditions with their neighbors, a destination for visitors to the region to discover our local heritage, and a great resource for students and scholars to study materials in our archives. We want the Center to be lively for visitors, but also the place where we can create programming to take to communities throughout the North Country.
Q How does TAUNY plan to raise the funds to create The TAUNY Center?
A TAUNY has been developing plans for a capital campaign “Keeping TAUNY Evergreen”--building on our popular logo of a folk art tree and our mission to encourage the conservation of local customs and traditions. The Evergreen Campaign is co-chaired by SUNY Canton President Joe and Dine Kennedy, along with T. Urling and Mabel Walker of Watertown as honorary co-chairs. The Capital Campaign Committee is made up of civic and business leaders from several North Country counties.

Q What is the goal of the Evergreen Campaign?
A The goal of the campaign is to raise $1,250,000 in gifts and pledges from individuals and families, local businesses and corporations, as well as grants from private foundations, and state and federal agencies. The campaign was announced to the public at TAUNY's annual member reception in Friday, November 13, 2009.
Q How will funds raised by the campaign be used?
A Funds raised will be used to retire the mortgage and complete renovations to the entire building. Renovations will allow TAUNY to provide more and better programs and services. Paying off the mortgage will reduce annual operating costs by eliminating debt service.
Q How can I contribute to The Evergreen Campaign?
A You can help us create The TAUNY Center and put us on the road to a great future with your gift. Leadership Gifts will be recognized on an Evergreen Campaign commemorative wood plaque, displayed in the TAUNY gallery. All gifts will be recognized in a published donor report at the end of the campaign. (Gifts to TAUNY’s Early Bird fundraising in 2008 will also be included as part of the Evergreen Campaign.)

If you prefer, TAUNY can work with you to arrange for payments over a period of time. TAUNY is an approved 501(c)(3) organization; donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
Q How will my annual membership contribution be accounted for in the Campaign?
A As a nonprofit organization, TAUNY depends on annual membership contributions to support operating costs and programs. Membership contributions are vital to TAUNY’s yearly budget and will be accounted for separately from campaign contributions. Please be sure to renew your TAUNY membership along with considering a separate contribution to the Evergreen Campaign.
Q How do I make my gift to the Evergreen Campaign?
A Complete a Campaign Pledge Form and mail or fax it to TAUNY. If you have questions or would like further information, contact Varick Chittenden, Heritage Center Project Director.
