Visit The TAUNY Center any Saturday this month and you’ll find folks exploring and trying their hand at a variety of traditional North Country arts. Following this Saturday’s docket of woodcarvers and basketmakers, next Saturday, March 20, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, young people hoping to learn to braid a rug can get a start. Traditional Adirondack rug braider Helen Condon will offer this one-hour workshop during which youngsters age 7 to 10 will learn rug-braiding skills by making a small braided wool doorknob wreath.

The cost of the workshop is $10 per person for TAUNY members and $15 for non-members. All materials will be provided.

The following Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ruth Kreuzer of Canton will offer a workshop on Pysanky, or Ukrainian Easter egg decorating . Ruth will talk about and demonstrate this ancient and beautiful form of folk art in which eggs are decorated using beeswax and dyes. She will begin with a short program and slide show describing the ancient art following which participants will decorate their own eggs. All necessary materials will be supplied and participants will finish with decorated eggs and a starter kit, including dyes, beeswax, a stylus, designs, and instructions.

The fee for the workshop is $25 for TAUNY members ($35 for non-members), which includes the cost of all materials and handouts.

Participation for both workshops is limited and registration is required. Call 386-4289 or email us to register.
