TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, presents its next “Talk & Taste” lunchtime program featuring Richard Longstreth, scholar and author of “A Guide to Architecture in the Adirondacks,” on Thursday, October 12 from 12:00-1:00pm. This program will include a talk and book signing. Richard Longstreth examines Adirondack architecture in light of major factors that have influenced the region's settlement and development through the twentieth century. This talk first addresses industries—such as agriculture, logging, tanning, mining, and the manufacture of iron and iron products—that brought people to the region after the Revolution. He will then discuss how land and water transportation helped industrial enterprises reach their markets. The talk will also address recreation as a long-standing, major force in the Adirondack economy. Diverse recreational facilities, from campsite to hotel, have had a decisive impact on shaping much of the Adirondack landscape. Conservation initiatives have also done much to define the region’s physical character. The talk will end with some thoughts about what is (and is not) distinct about the architecture and the built environment more generally within the Blue Line.

This lunchtime presentation is part of the TAUNY Talk & Taste Program Series, which features lunchtime presentations on a variety of regional topics along with an opportunity to purchase a specially crafted meal by Big Spoon Kitchen (Potsdam, NY), inspired by the themes of the talk. The lunch for this event is a hearty squash soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, warming as an Adirondack hearth.

The cost for the lunch is $12 or $10 for TAUNY Friends. Guests can reserve their lunch by October 11 by calling TAUNY at 315-386-4289 or at TAUNY’s online folkstore at tauny.org. There is a suggested donation of $5 for this presentation, for those not purchasing lunch. Additional information about this program series can be found at tauny.org.

The TAUNY Center is located at 53 Main Street, Downtown Canton, NY. TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people understand and appreciate the folk traditions and local culture of everyday life—present and past—in the North Country. To do so, TAUNY seeks to research and preserve a record of diverse groups, customs and traditions; to recognize and empower traditional arts and artists; to identify and promote regional identity; and to provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about folklore and culture. More information is available at tauny.org.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Richard Longstreth is Professor of American Studies and director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at George Washington University. Paralleling his academic responsibilities, Longstreth's professional interests lie in two, complementary realms. As a scholar, he has written extensively on the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture in the U.S. In recent years, his research has focused on retail development in major metropolitan areas, relating economic, design, urbanistic, and cultural factors that have fundamentally reshaped the American landscape since 1920. Professor Longstreth has also been involved in the preservation field at the national, state, and local levels and in the public and private sectors. Currently, he is writing a book about the preservation of mid-twentieth-century architecture and landscape and editing one on additions to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
