At the annual Member Reception on Friday night, November 13, TAUNY announced the
$1.25 million Evergreen Campaign to raise funds for renovations to the folklife organization’s new home at 53 Main Street in Canton.

“The Evergreen Campaign will secure TAUNY’s future home and its role in
sustaining North Country knowledge and culture,” said Board President
Jackie Sauter in announcing the campaign and renovation plans. Sauter
also introduced Campaign Co-Chairs Joe and Dine Kennedy and the
Evergreen Campaign Committee.

“TAUNY is committed to celebrating the people, stories, and traditions
that define and enrich our part of northern New York. Dine and I are
delighted to be a part of these exciting plans to create The TAUNY
Center—a North Country destination that will showcase our region’s folk
culture and living traditions,” said Joe Kennedy, who is also President
of SUNY Canton.

The Kennedys reported that, working with staff and the campaign
committee, they have already secured $468,285 or 37 percent of their
goal from North Country friends, private foundations, and public
funders.The Kennedys introduced members the Evergreen Campaign
Committee, who have been working together for almost a year in
preparation for tonight’s announcement: T. Urling and Mabel Walker of
Watertown, honorary co-chairs; Helen Condon, Parishville; Eric
Gustafson, Massena; Fred Hanss, Potsdam; Rebecca Hopfinger, Clayton;
Judy Longshore, Canton; Susan Merrell, Lowville; Allan Newell, Hammond;
Terry Niles, Brushton; Jackie Sauter, Canton; Julie Silver, Canton; Ed
and Linda Smith, Ogdensburg; and John and Georgia Vose, Canton.

Guests at the Member Reception were treated to a preview of renovation
plans by The TAUNY Center Project Director Varick Chittenden. “We hope
to create a dynamic space for year-round activities for visitors of all
ages,” he said, describing renovation for the 1870s-era Victorian
building in the heart of Canton’s business district, formerly the home
of J.J. Newberry’s department store.

Details about the campaign and renovations are available on the
Evergreen Campaign page.
