TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, invites the community to celebrate artist Frederic Remington’s 156th birthday and kick off the 16th annual Remington Arts Festival on Friday, October 6 from 7:00-9:00pm at The TAUNY Center. A well-known figure in fine arts, Remington is also a local folk figure, with the community sharing stories of his having been born and done some courting around Canton, as well as being buried in town. As a community partner in the Remington Arts Festival, TAUNY is pleased to celebrate local heritage and place-based creative work that captures artists’ interpretations of the places and people that are meaningful to them. At the party, guests will also have a chance to get a sneak peek at the Remington Student Art Competition display, featuring the work of young artists from around the region.
Light refreshments will be served, including birthday cake, with Fred and Eva in attendance to blow out the candles. George Dodds, North Country Heritage Award recipient Don Woodcock, and friends will be playing cowboy songs. There will be a cash bar, including beer and cider from local producers on site.
This program is part of the Remington Arts Festival, held the first weekend in October to celebrate the life of Frederic Remington, Canton born and buried painter and sculptor.
The TAUNY Center is located at 53 Main Street, Downtown Canton, NY. TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people understand and appreciate the folk traditions and local culture of everyday life—present and past—in the North Country. To do so, TAUNY seeks to research and preserve a record of diverse groups, customs and traditions; to recognize and empower traditional arts and artists; to identify and promote regional identity; and to provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about folklore and culture. More information is available at tauny.org.
