Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) will hold an opening reception on Saturday, March 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for an exhibition of buttons collected by Judy Rexfordís mother, Iris Rexford, of Colton, NY. Judy will be in the gallery to answer questions about her motherís collection, and to share stories and memorabilia from her motherís time with the North Country Button Club. The buttons will remain on display at the TAUNY Center through the end of April.

In 1963, Iris Rexford became a member of the North Country Button Club, which her friend Ruth Crandall of Colton had started a few years earlier after getting involved with a similar group in New Jersey, where she lived for some time. When Crandall started the North Country group, it quickly became popular, as saving and collecting buttons fit right in with the North Country knack for combining thrift and beauty through traditional domestic arts. The North Country Button Club hasn't met in recent years, but Judy and others in the community continue to preserve the button collections started by their family members and share the stories those buttons represent.

This year, TAUNY is showcasing personal collections from individuals around our region. Each collection has a special connection to the North Country; most of the items were originally produced or utilized here. These collections represent a diversity of interests related to the folk life and ongoing traditions of our region. TAUNY is pleased to share with visitors objects that are dear to the families who collect them.

This exhibit is made possible by the generous support of Five Elements Living, Colton.

The TAUNY Center is located at 53 Main Street, downtown Canton. TAUNY is a nonprofit organization that showcases the folk culture and living traditions of New York's North Country, offering opportunities to experience, learn about, and reflect on issues related to life in our rural region. More information is available at tauny.org.
