Many new artists have work in the TAUNY Folkstore, which is great news for vendors and visitors! Word continues to spread that we are an important outlet for folk artists and their extraordinary talents.

Folkstore Manager Jody Tosti describes the most recent additions to the shop, long-time woodworkers, Sherman and Annette Craig, Wanakena, with their exceptionally crafted rustic furniture. Conrad Stuntz, Canton, has helped complete our selection of kitchenware with his unique wooden tongs, spatulas, and cutting boards. They’re great and he makes fabulous wooden kids’ toys, too! Also from Canton, is Bob Pinkerton, with a collection of his beautiful Shaker boxes and trays.

JoEllen Saumier, Chateaugay, has a line of felted ornaments and holiday felting kits, including some for beginners, that are quite clever and a great way to spend a snowy afternoon. And, as winter approaches, the selection of hats, scarves, mittens (think Toodee’s!), and socks is growing! And speaking of socks, Kathy Schaper, DeKalb Junction, will have some knitted Christmas stockings in the Folkstore soon!

While all these new members to the Folkstore make for a richer experience, it’s been the longstanding North Country folk artists at TAUNY that have helped us develop a following.  So thanks to people like woodturners, Bill Drinkwine, Massena, and Bill Smithers, Hammond, for their consistent good work; Eleanor Austin, our 92-year old rag rug maker from Harrisville, who is still producing quality rugs and place mats; the Hurlbutt family of Canton for their fine maple products and support of TAUNY; Pat Ullrich, DeKalb Junction, with her amazing primitive rug hooking, and carver Ron Riley, Massena, whose work ranges from wizard walking sticks to a line of folk art birds.

There are many more people to recognize, but thanks to all of you for helping make our part of the new digs so special. Be sure to come see us.
