Do you have a favorite recipe that includes buttermilk? For me, it’s the cornbread my dear friend and singing partner Megan converted me to in Virginia. It’s a little sweet and quite hearty (just like the songs we love to sing), and so good even devotees of savory Southern cornbreads will admit it’s a keeper! All I know is, one enormous cornbread skillet wasn’t near enough the last time I made it for a gathering…

On Saturday, June 7, the annual Dairy Princess Parade will be coming through Canton. To celebrate and join in the Dairy Princess festivities, TAUNY will host a Buttermilk Baking Reception & Recipe Swap, and we’d like to feature your favorite buttermilk recipes!

Here’s how our exchange between community members and local baking businesses will work: certified bakers from around the area will choose one recipe from those submitted and bake a couple of batches to share at a reception at The TAUNY Center during the Dairy Princess Festival on June 7. At the reception, visitors will vote on their favorites, and when the results are in, we’ll announce the winners on our website and in our social media, sharing the recipes, their stories, and the bakers who brought it to the table.

We’ll also have a recipe swap at the reception, and invite folks to bring in copies of any buttermilk recipes they’d like to share. So, we’d like to invite you to share your own favorite buttermilk recipe—sweet or savory!—and any stories that go along with it—in one of two ways:

1. Submit a recipe by Friday, May 16, to give local baking businesses time to choose one from the submitted recipes. You can submit recipes by email to programs@tauny.org or in hard copy to The TAUNY Center, 53 Main Street. Along with the recipe, please include your name and hometown, information about where you got the recipe, how you learned it, and any stories you’d like to share about the recipe and/or family or other baking traditions associated with it.

 2. Bring 20 copies* of a favorite buttermilk recipe to the reception at The TAUNY Center during the Dairy Princess Parade on June 7. Alongside the samples, we’ll set up an area for people to share their recipes and pick up copies of other recipes they’re interested in.

We hope you’ll join us in what is sure to be a delightful and delicious event! Plus, we want to see if anyone can give Camilla’s favorite buttermilk cornbread a run for its money! Drop us a line at programs@tauny.org with any questions, and meanwhile, have fun looking through your recipe collections!

*If you aren’t able to bring multiple copies, submit your recipe to TAUNY in person or by email at programs@tauny.org by Wednesday, June 4, and we will make copies for you.
