The final “Folk Art in the Afternoon” presentation will take place at The TAUNY Center on Wednesday, March 21, at 4 p.m. The afternoon series explores the art and artists showcased in TAUNY’s current exhibit “Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Life.”

For the final presentation, Varick Chittenden will offer an informal illustrated talk about Hazel Tyrrell and her hand-carved birds. The Kindred Pursuits exhibit is organized by themes. Hazel Tyrrell is the case study for the “Identity” section, which describes folk artists for whom close identification with a group to which they belong is of great importance.  A North Country native and a great outdoorswoman, Hazel Tyrrell was a self-taught artist who sold thousands of her carved birds, many of which remain prized possessions today.

TAUNY founder Varick Chittenden long been interested in “The Birdwoman of Pierrepont.” He first visited her when he was a student at St. Lawrence University in the early 1960s. He curated an exhibit of over 100 examples of her work for TAUNY in 1994, and he wrote an article, “The Wood Menagerie,” for the September/October 2007 edition of Adirondack Life.
According to Chittenden, “Hazel Tyrrell was beloved by those who got to know her when she was carving and painting songbirds in her modest Pierrepont farmhouse during the last 20 or so years of her life.  Many local families still treasure a few of her birds they were lucky enough to purchase at the time. As time has gone on, her work has become appreciated for its artistry and for the story of this special woman and her life.”

The Folk Art in the Afternoon program will begin at 4 p.m.; the presentation will last approximately 30 minutes and there will be time for questions and answers.

Tea, coffee, and light refreshments will be provided.
