Canton’s annual celebration of art excellence in the North Country – the Remington Arts Festival – is slated for Saturday, September 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The mission of the Remington Arts Festival, coordinated by TAUNY, the St. Lawrence County Arts Council, and the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, is to celebrate traditional and up-and-coming art, music, and performance in Northern New York and to educate the people of Canton and surrounding communities about the historic relevance of renowned artist and sculptor, Frederic Remington, who was born in Canton. TAUNY coordinates the featured artist and musicians for the Festival.

Heuvelton artist Wayne Brown of Tired Iron Sculptures is this year’s featured artist. Brown, who transforms forgotten farm machinery and obsolete tools into fanciful sculpture, will speak about his work and lead art programs in area schools during the week of the Festival, and will show and talk about his work during the Festival's all-day Art Show in the Park.

Brown first became inspired to make iron sculptures after moving to the North Country in 1990, joining odd-shaped pieces of metal he found to make birds, other animals, and abstract sculptures. Today, Brown continues to collect metal, from scrapyards, Amish auctions, and farmers he knows, to create unique works of art. Brown has led a children’s workshop at TAUNY and been a featured Folkstore artist.

Another highlight of the Remington Arts Festival this year will be a free concert by The Fraser Family and Friends of Harrisville, this year’s featured musicians. The concert will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on the Festival Day at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton, across the street from the Village Green.

The concert is guaranteed to be a powerful musical experience, as the 16 members of the group sing and play the songs they have been singing together all their lives. Three generations of the family gather regularly to sing and play the repertoire of traditional Scottish and Irish tunes passed down to them, along with newer songs in the Celtic style. In 2005, the Fraser Family received a North Country Heritage Award from TAUNY for mastery of their musical tradition and commitment to passing it on to future generations. In 2010 they released their first CD, Home of Our Hearts, on the TAUNY label. The featured musician performance is possible thanks to underwriting support from Gray & Gray, CPAs.
