To accommodate the contractors working on the electrical system, new lighting, and floor refinishing, and to prepare for a new Folkstore layout, The TAUNY Center will be closed beginning Monday, June 6. The folklife center in downtown Canton will remain closed until the grand re-opening in September.

“We’ve had wonderful public and private support for this project,” explains TAUNY Executive Director Jill Breit. “As anyone who’s ever worked on a renovation project knows, it takes patience to get the job done right.  We’ve moved some of the project elements originally slated for Phase 2 up into Phase 1, and believe the extra time now will be well worth the effort.”

While The TAUNY Center is closed the staff will be working on projects and programs around the region. A number of 25th anniversary events are planned, including a garden party at the home of the late folk artist Carl Martel of Ogdensburg, the Cooks Corners Ice Cream Social in Pierrepont, and two concerts, one in Croghan featuring Dan Berggren and one in Tupper Lake featuring Dave Ruch.  

Work will also continue on the exhibit “Kindred Pursuits: Folk Art in North Country Life,” which will open at the Center’s gala re-opening, and on a companion website. 
Breit comments, “Though our building in Canton will be closed for the summer, TAUNY as an organization will definitely be open for business as usual. The staff is looking forward to being on the road and looking forward to settling back into our offices in the fall.”
