TAUNY is bringing the traditions of Hungarian music and dance to the North Country!

On Saturday, April 30, from 7 to 11 p.m., the Hepburn Library of Norfolk will be transformed into a Táncház, or traditional Hungarian dancehouse. TAUNY’s Táncház will feature the Életfa Hungarian Folk Band and two expert dance instructors who will teach participants Hungarian folk dances. Dancehouses are traditionally based social evenings of dance that include mass dance instruction and participatory dance.

An integral part of the Hungarian folk revival movement in the 1960s and 1970s, dancehouses have since become wildly popular, even in the urban center of Budapest. This spirit and energy is kept alive in Hungarian and Hungarian-American communities in the Northeast by groups such as Életfa, known as North America’s pre-eminent Hungarian dancehouse band. Joining them for dance instruction are replica rolex members of Csurdongolo, a folk dance group also based in New Jersey.

The TAUNY event is the first in a series of Hungarian dance and music events being presented statewide this spring by the New York Folklore Society, a service organization for the field of traditional arts. The April 30 event is free and open to the public and is also supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts.

Accompanying each concert in the NYSF series will be a planning meeting with selected members of New York’s various Hungarian and Hungarian-American communities. The goal is to discuss plans for a potential traveling exhibition of some of New York’s talented Hungarian traditional Replica Rolex artists.

For more information about the concert series or the planning meetings, please contact Lisa Overholser at the New York Folklore Society (518-346-7008/lisa@nyfolklore.org). For more information about the April 30 dancehouse, contact TAUNY (315-386-4289/ hannah@tauny.org).
