TAUNY, the Sustainable Living Project (SLP), and students of the St. Lawrence University Greenhouse are joining forces to offer a community contra dance on Friday, March 25, from
7 to 9:30 p.m.. in the St. Mary's School Gymnasium in Canton .

TAUNY, the SLP, and the Greenhouse see the dance as an opportunity to bring together students and the broader community for a healthful, community-building event that carries on the tradition of country barn and social dances.

Contra dancing features dancing in "sets" of about a dozen couples. Dancers interact with their partners, and everyone else in the set too, as they dance to energetic, live music. A caller first explains the movements and then prompts dancers throughout the dance, as in square dancing.

Beth Robinson will call the dance and music will be provided by "The Katz and the Fiddles," with Gretchen Koehler and Don Woodcock on fiddles and piano, and David Katz on bass. A beginner’s lesson at 7 p.m. will be followed by the general dance from 7:30 to 9:30. Please wear soft-soled shoes and bring water to this alcohol-free event.

Suggested donation is $10-12 for the general public, $5 for students, and $3 for SLU students. The community Contra Dance is generously supported by St. Mary’s School, SLU Student Life, the Thelomathesian Society, the Swingin' Saints, and the SLU Greenhouse.
