It’s all Sugar & Spice and everything nice at The TAUNY Center, where the judges have made their decisions about this year’s exceptionally original and imaginative gingerbread entries.

In the children’s category, the judges gave top honors to Hammond 4-H and FFA Fair by the children of the Pierce family of Heuvelton:  Reggie (18), Connor (16), Reilly (15), Carter (13), Maureen (9), Meaghan (8), Michael (5). About their entry the Pierces explain:  “Our family loves the fair! We go every year with our sheep and 4-H projects. It is a true country fair, with good food, good people, and lots of old-fashioned fun. Dedicated volunteers from the North Country put in lots of good work to make the fair possible and keep the tradition going.” The gingerbread exhibit is a tradition for the Pierces, who have participated for years. Judges commented on the gingerbread fair:  “Clever use of ingredients… Wonderful details, and love the bird’s eye view you give us into the barn!”

In the children’s category second place went to Kelsea Whittier, age 8, for her rendition of Half Way Rock; third place was awarded to Sieonna Williamson, age 10, for Snapper Snow Day.

In the category for youth groups, the judges gave first place honors to Winter Castle by Brownie Girl Scout Troop 173: “Very refined—it seems like the Snow Queen herself could walk out the door at any moment.” The second place youth group entry was To Church We Go by the Heuvelton Homeschool Co-op.

The adult category had exceptional entries again this year. First place was awarded to Susan Wilder’s Wintertime at Camp, a frosty rendering of her family’s camp on Tupper Lake. The judges liked “the Christmas lights and the bushes, the logs stacked under the porch, the siding, and especially the fact that you can peek through the windows and see the interior (while the guy inside is peeking out through his binoculars at us!).” The also extraordinary second-place entry was a gingerbread louboutin sneakers version of Canton’s  Hotel Harrington by Rebecca Weld. “The architectural details, like the ‘gingerbread’ trim on the peak, the tiny panes of glass, and the Christmas lights in the window, are wonderful,” said the judges. “A gingerbread tour-de-force!”

The judges for this year’s Sugar & Spice contest were Lynn Ekfelt, editor of TAUNY’s award-winning cookbook Good Food Served Right, Cindy Murdie of Cindy’s Cake Shop in Canton, and Hannah Harvester, TAUNY staff folklorist. The judges’ determinations were based on quality of construction, originality of concept, creative Louboutin Sneakers use of ingredients, and general aesthetic appeal.

All of this year's entries can be viewed in the 2010 Sugar & Spice Photo Gallery.

The Sugar & Spice gingerbread contest is possible thanks to lots of creative and enthusiastic bakers and builders, and generous underwriting support from The Stewart’s Shops, Riverside Liquor, and Cindy’s Cake Shop.

The exhibit will remain on display through Thursday, December 23.
