The woods, the water, the school house. TAUNY’s 2010 Salute to North Country Legends on Sunday, October 17, at 2 p.m., at the Best Western University Inn in Canton, reaches into the North Country and touches on traditions for everyone.

Each year Traditional Arts in Upstate New York honors local “legends” who are masters of North Country traditions. Recipients of the North Country Heritage Award are individuals, families, or community groups who have mastered traditional arts or customs identified with our region and remain committed to passing them on to future generations.

This year’s honorees are Chazy Central Rural School’s Class Day, St. Lawrence River fishing guide Clay Ferguson of Clayton, and the Haskell Yancey Family, maple sugar producers from Croghan.

The Salute to North Country Legends includes audiovisual presentations about each award recipient and musical entertainment will be provided by fiddlers Gretchen Koehler and Don Woodcock.

Also this year, TAUNY will present its Evergreen Award to woodcarver Ron Riley of Massena. The Evergreen acknowledges Ron’s “continuing interest in and generous support of traditional cultures, arts, and artists of the North Country of New York State and of programs that increase public understanding and appreciation of them.”

The Salute is free and everyone is welcome.
