Woods & Water

The abundance of wooded areas
and a good supply of water have always been essential to North Country life. Early farmers were challenged to clear the land of virgin timber in order to raise crops. For generations, woodsmen have harvested logs for sawmills, tanneries, and paper mills. From the beginning, many large and small bodies of water have provided transportation for business and pleasure. Stories, songs, crafts, and customs related to life in nature also abound.

Each of the following individuals and groups has been selected by TAUNY as exemplary masters of the traditional art or practice listed with their names.
