Visit The TAUNY Center on Saturday, May 19, for a Meet the Artist program and one-day-only North Country Folkstore “Trunk Sale.”  Rustic furniture maker Jamie Henderson and botanical illustrator Judith Utter will be on hand to talk about their work and answer visitors’ questions. They will be showing items that are not usually for sale in the Folkstore.

Henderson, who grew up in Morristown and now lives in Gouverneur, will welcome visitors on the sidewalk in front of TAUNY from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jamie’s love for wood began when he was a young boy collecting driftwood on the St. Lawrence River. Mostly self taught, he is still inspired by the driftwood he collects, happy to discover what each piece can become. Before transitioning to rustic furniture making, he built cabins and his own house. He now builds furniture full time – his goal is to make an affordable piece of rustic furniture for everyone.  He is open to doing custom work with no obligation – bring your ideas!

Artist Judith Utter will be in the Folkstore from 1 to 3 p.m., showing the tools of her trade and a range of her work, from watercolor paintings to decorated silk scarves. Judith’s background in art and science – she has worked as a studio potter and a clinical scientist - come together in her botanical art. She is inspired by the natural North Country surroundings and awed by everything that grows here. The organic garden where she grows the vegetables and flowers she uses as specimens for her watercolor paintings is right outside her studio window. She believes the characteristics of watercolor - fluidity, transparency, and endless color possibilities - are well suited to capturing the vibrancy of nature.
