Tupper Lake, Franklin County
Quilter & Rug Hooker
(1917-2004)

Genevieve Yates Sutter was a native of Tupper Lake who returned to her home village for the last 20 years of her life. For many years Genevieve hooked rugs, for which she learned to prepare her own materials and create many of her own designs. She later took up quilting, working at first with various traditional designs, like Chain of Lightning, Flower Baskets, and Double Wedding Ring. Among her album quilts are collections of local scenes, like the 13 North Country churches her Methodist minister grandfather served in his career and a dozen logger hotels from the early days of Tupper Lake. Her album representing each of the 46 high peaks of the Adirondacks was a highlight of a traveling exhibition celebrating the Adirondack Park centennial. She was a founder of the Raquette River Quilters of Tupper Lake and a mainstay of the planning and production of the biennial summer group quilt show in that village.
